What is an HR Audit?

Most SMEs discover their HR gaps only when it’s too late and expensive to fix.

The Save Group’s HR Audit is a practical, structured review of your current people systems and processes, designed specifically for small and medium-sized businesses.

Get a clear picture of what’s working, what’s missing and where risks may exist, with actionable recommendations to strengthen your HR framework and better support your business.

What Does Our HR Audit Cover?

Modern Award & Fair Work Compliance

Work through how your business classifies, pays and manages employees against the relevant Modern Awards and Fair Work obligations, to pinpoint where compliance gaps and risks may exist.

Policies & Procedures

Explore whether the right policies are in place and up to date, covering both the documents you're required to have and those that protect your business and support your team day to day.

Employment Contracts

Discuss how your employment and contractor arrangements are set up, to identify where agreements may be missing, out of date, or inconsistent with how people are actually engaged.

Onboarding & Offboarding

Look at how employees enter and leave your business, and whether you have clear, consistent processes to bring new starters up to speed and manage departures professionally.

Recruitment

Talk through your approach to attracting, assessing and hiring people, including the processes and checks that support fair, consistent and compliant hiring decisions.

Performance Management

Assess how employee expectations, feedback, development and performance concerns are currently managed, and whether the right structure is in place to handle performance consistently.

Culture & Retention

Consider the people practices that shape engagement, workplace culture and retention, and how well you understand what keeps your team motivated and committed.

What You Get From Your HR Audit

Our HR Audit is designed to be quick and easy for time-poor business owners:

1. Expert HR Consultation

We begin with a dedicated 2-hour consultation to understand your business, your team and your current people processes.

Together, we review how HR is currently managed and explore any existing concerns, challenges or areas where you would like greater confidence.

2. Risk Assessment Report

Following the consultation, you’ll receive a clear assessment of your HR practices, highlighting key risks, gaps and priority areas.

You’ll know what needs attention and where improvements can be made.

3. Action Planning Session

We then work through the findings with you and turn them into a practical roadmap.

You’ll know what should be addressed first, what can be improved over time, and what actions will help create stronger HR foundations for your business.

Why is an HR Audit Important?

For many small and growing businesses, HR systems develop gradually as the team expands and new situations arise. Contracts, policies and internal processes are often added over time rather than reviewed as one complete system.

This can create gaps that are difficult to identify from inside the business and may increase compliance risks, create people management challenges and make future growth more difficult.

Common issues caused by these gaps:

Compliance Risk

Outdated or inconsistent documentation and processes can increase exposure to workplace disputes, claims or penalties.

construction

Barriers to Growth

HR systems that worked for five employees may not work effectively when your business grows to 15, 30 or 50 people.

Time-Consuming People Issues

Poorly defined processes can make employee disputes, performance concerns and sudden exits harder to manage.

Unnecessary Business Costs

Identifying problems early is easier than trying to resolve them after a dispute or compliance issue has occurred.

Employment Law Changes

Australian employment law has changed substantially in the last three years. Most small business contracts and policies have not kept up.

Jan 2025

Wage theft is criminal

Intentional underpayment became a criminal offence. Weak record keeping is now a different kind of exposure.

Aug 2025

Right to disconnect

Obligations extended to small business employers, covering contact outside working hours.

Aug 2024

Casual definition changed

Casual contracts written before this date frequently no longer hold up.

Dec 2023

Fixed term limits

Caps on the duration and number of consecutive fixed term contracts took effect.
